Google Caffeine

Google Caffeine is the web indexing system Google completed in June 2010. It replaced the old batch, layered index with continuous incremental indexing, so new and updated pages could enter the index in seconds instead of weeks, delivering results Google described as 50% fresher.
Before Caffeine, Google built its index in layers. Some layers refreshed faster than others, but the main layer updated only every couple of weeks. To refresh a layer, Google analyzed a large slice of the web first, so a gap sat between the moment it found a page and the moment that page appeared in results.
Caffeine replaced that with incremental indexing. Google now analyzes the web in small portions and adds new or changed pages straight to a single index as it finds them. Google said the system processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel and stores close to 100 million gigabytes in one database.
Indexing, not ranking
The most misread part: Caffeine changed how pages get into the index, not how they get ranked. It added no ranking signal and gave no reward for publishing more often. Freshness-based ranking effects come from separate systems (like the later Freshness update), not Caffeine itself. What Caffeine did was lay the plumbing for near-real-time indexing that Google’s later freshness and vertical (video, news) indexing systems build on.
Practical read: publish quality content on your own schedule and expect fast pickup. There is no bonus for artificial daily churn, only for pages worth crawling.
