Google core updates, ranking systems and penalties. What changes, and why rankings move.

Algorithm volatility Algorithm volatility is the measured turbulence in search rankings across many keywords over a short window. Sharp spikes signal Google is rolling out an update (confirmed or unconfirmed), while the daily baseline reflects normal SERP churn.
Algorithmic penalty An algorithmic penalty is a ranking demotion applied automatically by Google's ranking or spam systems, with no human reviewer and no Search Console notification. It contrasts with a manual action, which a human at Google issues and reports in Search Console so it can be appealed.
Broad core update A broad core update is a significant, wide-reaching change Google makes to its core ranking systems several times a year. It does not target or penalize specific sites; it re-weights how relevance and quality are judged, so pages can rise, fall, or hold steady across many topics at once.
Exact match domain (EMD) An exact match domain (EMD) is a domain name that matches a target keyword word for word, like bluewidgets.com for "blue widgets." Google's 2012 EMD update stopped low-quality EMDs from ranking on the domain name alone, so an EMD gives no ranking boost by itself today.
Expired domain abuse Expired domain abuse is a Google spam policy that targets buying a lapsed domain and repurposing it mainly to manipulate search rankings by hosting low-value content that trades on the domain's past reputation. Google announced it in March 2024, and violating sites can be demoted or removed from results.
Freshness algorithm Google's freshness algorithm is a group of ranking systems, often called query deserves freshness (QDF), that temporarily favor recent content for queries where users expect up-to-date results, such as breaking news, recurring events, and fast-changing topics. It has little effect on evergreen queries.
Glue Glue is a Google ranking system, revealed in the DOJ v. Google antitrust trial, that works alongside Navboost. It aggregates user interactions (clicks, hovers, scrolls, swipes) with non-web-result SERP features to decide which universal-search features appear and how they are ranked.
Google algorithm The Google algorithm is not a single formula but the combined set of automated ranking systems Google uses to decide which pages best answer a query and in what order they appear. Systems such as PageRank, RankBrain, BERT, and spam detection each weigh different signals, mostly at the page level.
Google algorithm update A Google algorithm update is any change Google makes to its automated ranking systems, from minor daily adjustments to broad, named "core updates" that reshuffle results across the whole web. Most updates go unannounced; the significant ones are logged on Google's Search ranking updates list.
Google BERT Google BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is a natural-language model added to Google Search in 2019 that reads each word of a query in the context of the words around it, including small words like "to" and "for," to grasp intent instead of matching keywords in isolation.
Google Caffeine Google Caffeine is the web indexing system Google completed in June 2010. It replaced the old batch, layered index with continuous incremental indexing, so new and updated pages could enter the index in seconds instead of weeks, delivering results Google described as 50% fresher.
Google core update A Google core update is one of the broad, periodic changes Google makes to its core ranking systems several times a year. It reassesses how relevance and quality are weighed across the whole index, so rankings can move site-wide even when you have changed nothing on your own pages.
Google deduplication Google deduplication is the set of systems that stop near-duplicate or same-site pages from crowding one query. Google clusters duplicate URLs and shows a single canonical version, caps most sites at two listings ("site diversity"), and drops a page from the regular results once it wins the featured snippet.
Google Florida Google Florida was a November 2003 search algorithm update, the first Google shake-up felt by mainstream site owners, that devalued keyword stuffing, hidden text, and other early on-page spam and wiped out rankings for many commercial sites right before the holiday shopping season.
Google Fred Google Fred is the community nickname for an unconfirmed Google ranking update that rolled out around March 7, 2017. It hit sites built for ad revenue rather than readers: thin content, heavy ads, and aggressive affiliate links. Google never officially named or confirmed it.
Google Hummingbird Google Hummingbird is a 2013 rewrite of Google's core search algorithm that shifted ranking from matching individual keywords to interpreting the meaning and intent behind a whole query. It let Google handle longer, conversational questions and set the base for semantic, entity-based search.
Google Medic Google Medic is the nickname for the broad core update Google rolled out starting August 1, 2018. It disproportionately hit health, medical, and other YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) sites, and pushed the SEO community toward E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) as a ranking concern.
Google MUM Google MUM (Multitask Unified Model) is an AI system Google introduced in 2021 to answer complex, multi-step search queries. Built on the T5 framework, Google says it is 1,000 times more powerful than BERT, trained across 75 languages, and multimodal (understanding text and images).
Google Panda Google Panda was a 2011 Google ranking change that demoted thin, low-quality, and duplicate content while rewarding sites with original, in-depth content. It is no longer a standalone update: Google folded Panda into its core ranking systems in 2015, so sitewide quality scoring now runs continuously.
Google penalty A Google penalty is any suppression of a site's search rankings for breaking Google's spam policies, applied either automatically by Google's ranking systems or by a human reviewer as a "manual action." Google's own term is "manual action"; "penalty" is the industry shorthand that also covers algorithmic demotions.
Google Pirate Google Pirate is a Google Search ranking signal, introduced in August 2012, that demotes sites which accumulate a high number of valid copyright-removal (DMCA) notices. It lowers a site's position across results, but never removes an individual page unless Google receives a specific valid takedown notice for it.
Google ranking systems Google ranking systems are the collection of automated systems Google combines to order search results, including PageRank, RankBrain, BERT, neural matching, and topic-specific systems like the reviews and freshness systems. They run continuously, unlike dated one-time ranking updates. Older systems such as Panda, Penguin, and the helpful content system are no longer standalone; Google folded them into core ranking.
Google Sandbox The Google Sandbox is a long-rumored probation period in which brand-new websites struggle to rank for months despite good content and links. Google has never confirmed it, and John Mueller has said there is no deliberate filter holding new sites back.
Google spam update A Google spam update is a notable improvement to Google's automated spam-detection systems, including the AI-based SpamBrain, that demotes or removes pages violating Google's spam policies. Google announces each rollout on its Search ranking-updates list.
Google Vince Google Vince was an early-2009 ranking change that boosted large, trusted brands for broad, competitive queries by weighting trust, authority, and PageRank more heavily. Google's Matt Cutts called it a small adjustment, not brand favoritism, but it visibly lifted big brands in results.
Helpful Content system Google's Helpful Content system was an automated, site-wide ranking signal (launched August 2022) that demoted pages made mainly to rank in search rather than to help people. In March 2024 Google folded it into its core ranking systems, so it no longer runs as a separate system.
HTTPS ranking signal HTTPS is a confirmed Google ranking signal that gives pages served over a secure connection a small edge over plain HTTP. Google describes it as a very lightweight signal, weaker than content quality, and today folds it into the broader page experience picture.
Intrusive interstitials penalty The intrusive interstitials penalty is a Google ranking signal that demotes pages hiding their main content behind disruptive pop-ups, overlays, or standalone interstitials, especially on mobile. It launched January 10, 2017 and remains current Google guidance.
Link spam update A link spam update is a Google spam update that uses its AI system SpamBrain to find and nullify unnatural, manipulative links at scale, so those links pass no ranking value. It devalues spammy links rather than penalizing the whole site, though the lost ranking benefit does not come back.
Manual action A manual action is a penalty a human reviewer at Google applies when a site violates Google's spam policies. Affected pages are ranked lower or dropped from Search results, and the notice appears in the Manual Actions report in Google Search Console.
Mobilegeddon Mobilegeddon is the nickname for Google's April 21, 2015 mobile-friendly update, which boosted the ranking of mobile-optimized pages in mobile search results. It worked page by page and affected only searches from mobile devices, not tablets or desktop.
Navboost Navboost is a Google ranking system, confirmed under oath at the 2023 DOJ antitrust trial, that re-ranks search results using aggregated user clicks. It memorizes click patterns per query over a rolling window of roughly 13 months and uses them to promote the results people actually engage with.
Neural matching Neural matching is an AI system Google uses to match the concepts behind a search query to the concepts inside web pages, instead of relying on exact keyword overlap. Google introduced it to Search in 2018, using neural embeddings to compare fuzzy meaning to fuzzy meaning.
Original content system Original content systems are a group of Google ranking systems that surface original content, especially original reporting, more prominently than pages that merely cite or aggregate it. They can keep the originating source visible as follow-up coverage appears, and use canonical markup to identify the primary page.
Page layout algorithm (Top Heavy) The page layout algorithm, nicknamed the Top Heavy update, is a Google ranking system launched in January 2012 that demotes pages burying their main content under too many ads above the fold. Sites with a normal amount of ads above the fold are not affected.
Parasite SEO Parasite SEO means publishing your content on a high-authority third-party domain so it borrows that host's ranking power instead of relying on your own site. Google now polices the manipulative version of this as site reputation abuse.
Passage ranking Passage ranking is a Google AI system that scores individual sections (passages) of a page independently, so a relevant passage buried in a long page can surface for a specific query even when the whole page isn't focused on that topic. Google ranks passages but still indexes whole pages.
Payday Loan update The Payday Loan update is a Google spam-fighting algorithm, first launched June 11, 2013, that targeted heavily spammed query spaces such as payday loans, gambling, pharma, and adult content. It ran in later iterations (2.0 and 3.0 in 2014) and worked separately from the Panda and Penguin systems.
Phantom update "Phantom update" is the unofficial nickname (coined by SEO analyst Glenn Gabe) for Google's unconfirmed, quality-focused ranking shifts, most famously the May 2015 "Quality Update." Google changed how its core ranking algorithm weighs site-quality signals rather than running a named spam filter like Panda.
Product reviews update Google's product reviews update (now called the reviews system) is a ranking component that rewards in-depth, first-hand review content with original analysis and demotes thin affiliate roundups that only summarize products. It launched in April 2021 and has updated continuously since late 2023.
Query deserves freshness (QDF) Query deserves freshness (QDF) is a Google ranking behavior that temporarily boosts recently published content for queries showing a spike in interest, such as breaking news or fast-changing topics. When a subject turns hot, Google favors fresher pages over older, established ones for that query.
RankBrain RankBrain is Google's machine-learning ranking system, launched in 2015, that interprets the meaning and intent behind search queries, including novel ones it has never seen, and matches them to relevant pages even when those pages don't contain the exact words typed.
Ranking signals Ranking signals are the individual inputs Google's algorithms weigh to order search results, such as query relevance, content quality (expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness), links from other reputable sites, and page usability. Each signal's weight shifts depending on the type of query.
Reviews update Google's reviews update, now part of Google's reviews system, is a ranking system that rewards in-depth, first-party review content written by people with real expertise and demotes thin reviews that just summarize products. It launched in 2021 as the product reviews update and now improves continuously.
Scaled content abuse Scaled content abuse is a Google spam policy violation: mass-producing pages (by AI, humans, or both) mainly to manipulate search rankings rather than help users. Google may rank offending sites lower or drop them from results entirely.
Semantic search Semantic search interprets the meaning and intent behind a query instead of matching literal keywords, returning results that fit what you meant rather than the exact words you typed. Google powers it with AI systems like BERT, RankBrain, and neural matching.
Site diversity Site diversity is Google's ranking system that generally limits how many pages from one site appear in top search results, usually no more than two per domain, so no single site dominates a query. Subdomains normally count as part of their root domain.
Site reputation abuse Site reputation abuse is a Google spam policy that targets third-party content published on a host site mainly to exploit that domain's established ranking signals, rather than to serve readers. It is the tactic SEOs nicknamed parasite SEO, and violations can trigger manual actions.
SpamBrain SpamBrain is Google's AI-based, machine-learning system for detecting and neutralizing search spam. It enforces Google's spam policies at scale, powers Google's "spam updates," and since the December 2022 link spam update also identifies unnatural links and cancels the ranking value they passed.
Twiddlers Twiddlers are Google re-ranking functions, surfaced in the 2024 Content Warehouse leak and the DOJ antitrust documents, that run inside the Superroot system after the core Ascorer score is set. They boost or demote a page's final position without changing the main ranking algorithm.
