Google Merchant Center
Also called: merchant center, GMC, Merchant Center Next
Google Merchant Center is a free Google platform where online retailers upload and manage product data (title, price, image, availability, GTIN). That feed powers both paid Shopping ads and free product listings across Google Search, Images, Maps, YouTube, the Shopping tab, and Gemini.
The data layer behind Shopping
Merchant Center is not a ranking surface. It is the feed that supplies product data to two different places: paid Shopping ads and free product listings. Both read from the same source, so a clean feed helps organic visibility and paid campaigns at the same time.
You submit products through a data source (called a “feed” before the Merchant Center Next redesign, which Google finished rolling out to all retailers by September 2024). Each item needs required attributes or it gets disapproved:
id, title, link, image_link, price, availability, description
plus a gtin or mpn for most branded products, and color, size, age_group, gender for apparel. Free listings also require a return policy on your site and shipping settings.
Approved products can appear at no cost across Google Search, Images, Maps, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Gemini, and Lens. One caveat straight from Google’s docs: an approved status grants permission to show a product for free, but it does not guarantee the product will be shown. That is where the SEO work starts, because Google still decides which products to surface based on data quality and relevance.
How it affects your traffic
Merchant Center is the plumbing, not the strategy. Getting products approved is table stakes; winning free listings and strong Shopping placement depends on feed quality, accurate titles, unique identifiers, and product pages that back the feed up. Our E-commerce SEO work covers both sides: the feed hygiene that keeps products eligible and the on-page and category content that helps Google (and AI surfaces like Gemini) choose your products over a competitor's. A disapproved or thin feed silently caps every product's reach, so it is one of the first things worth auditing.
