guest posting

Also called: guest post, guest article

Guest posting is publishing an article on someone else's website, usually in exchange for a byline and a link back to your own site. It works as a link-building and brand-awareness tactic, but Google only passes ranking credit through links that are editorially earned, not paid or mass-produced.

When guest posts help vs. hurt

Google does not object to guest posting itself. Its spam policies flag a narrower thing: advertorials or native advertising where payment is received for articles that include links passing ranking credit, or links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites. The fix Google names is simple. Such links are allowed when they carry a rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute, which tells Google not to pass ranking credit.

The line is intent and scale. In a 2017 reminder about large-scale article campaigns, Google listed the patterns that turn guest posts into link spam: keyword-stuffed anchor text, the same article duplicated across many sites, and writers with no real expertise in the topic. Google also warned the sites hosting these posts, saying accepting them can change how Google perceives the host’s quality and hurt its own rankings.

A genuine guest post, written for a real audience on a relevant site with a natural link, still works. A bundle of fifty posts with exact-match anchors is what gets discounted. Example: a link reading “our guide to technical SEO” pointing to that guide is fine; ten near-identical articles all linking “best cheap SEO services” across unrelated blogs is the pattern Google’s link systems target.

How it affects your traffic

Done right, guest posting earns referring domains and topical authority that still correlate with rankings, and it puts your brand in front of a relevant audience that can click through. Done wrong, it burns budget on links Google ignores or, at worst, invites a manual action that drags the whole site down. That gap is the difference between a placement that moves organic traffic and one that quietly wastes it. Our Link Building service targets editorially earned placements on real, relevant sites rather than anchor-stuffed article farms.
