H3 tag

Also called: h3 heading, h3, third-level heading

An H3 tag (<h3>) is a third-level HTML heading that labels a subsection nested inside an H2 section. It splits a larger topic into smaller, scannable parts, giving readers and search engines finer structure within the page.

Where an H3 fits

Headings run from <h1> down to <h6>. The H1 names the whole page, H2s mark the main sections, and an H3 sits one level below an H2 to divide a section into named parts. Google’s style guide is blunt about the nesting: “Don’t skip levels of the heading hierarchy. For example, put an <h3> tag only under an <h2> tag.”

A simple structure looks like this:

<h1> On-Page SEO Guide
  <h2> Heading Tags
    <h3> How the H1 works
    <h3> How the H2 works
    <h3> How the H3 works

One caveat worth stating plainly. Gary Illyes of Google has said heading order does not change rankings; semantic nesting matters for screen readers and for humans skimming, not because a crawler scores you on it. So the reason to get H3s right is readability and machine comprehension, not a hidden ranking lever.

Where H3s earn their keep is granularity. A long H2 section that answers several sub-questions reads better when each sub-question gets its own H3. Keep them short and descriptive (a few words that name the sub-topic), not keyword-stuffed. Google also warns against empty or purely decorative headings, so style with CSS instead of misusing an H3 for visual size.

How it affects your traffic

Clean H3 nesting turns a wall of text into discrete, labeled passages, which is exactly what both skimming readers and AI answer engines want. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI Overview lifts an answer, it pulls a self-contained passage, and a well-named H3 plus the paragraph under it is a clean unit to quote. Skipped or sloppy headings bury that answer inside an undifferentiated block. Fixing heading structure sitewide is core On-Page SEO work: it improves how humans scan, how Google parses sections, and how often your passages get cited in AI results.
