index bloat

Also called: index inflation, bloated index

Index bloat is when search engines index too many low-value URLs on your site (thin, duplicate, or auto-generated pages) relative to the pages you actually want ranking. It is a quality problem, not a raw page-count problem, and it wastes crawl budget while diluting your site's quality signals.

What causes it and how to fix it

Common sources are faceted navigation and URL parameters (?color=red&sort=price), session IDs, internal search-result pages, and CMS defaults like WordPress tag and date archives or Shopify auto-collections. Programmatic pages built at scale without guardrails are another big one: ship 10,000 near-duplicate templates and most add nothing a searcher needs.

Google does not use the phrase “index bloat,” but its crawl-budget guidance describes the same failure: if Google spends too much time crawling URLs that it shouldn’t, its crawlers “might decide that it’s not worth the time to look at the rest of your site.” Low-value URLs also spread internal link equity thin, and because Google applies site-level quality signals, a pile of weak indexed pages can drag on how the whole domain is judged.

The fix depends on intent, and mixing signals is a common mistake:

Detection usually starts in Search Console: a large gap between the pages you meant to index and the pages actually indexed is the tell.

How it affects your traffic

When crawl budget drains into junk URLs, Googlebot revisits your important pages less often, so new content and fixes take longer to show up in rankings. Bloat also dilutes the site-level quality signals that feed both classic rankings and AI answer surfaces like AI Overviews and ChatGPT, so your best pages compete with a handbrake on. A Technical SEO audit maps which indexed URLs earn traffic versus which are dead weight, then applies the right canonical, noindex, robots.txt, or pruning move to each so crawlers and rankings concentrate on the pages that convert.
