The index coverage report (now called the Page indexing report in Google Search Console) shows which of your URLs Google has indexed, which it has not, and the specific reason for each. It is the main tool for diagnosing why pages fail to appear in search.
What the report tells you
Google sorts every URL it knows about into two buckets: Indexed and Not indexed. Each not-indexed URL carries a reason, and those reasons are what you act on. Some are healthy: a noindex tag doing its job, a page with a redirect, a duplicate that points to a canonical. Others are problems. Crawled - currently not indexed means Googlebot fetched the page but decided it was not worth indexing, often a content-quality or duplication signal. Discovered - currently not indexed means Google found the URL but has not crawled it yet, which on large sites can point to crawl budget strain.
Two filters change what you see. “All known pages” covers everything Google has found. “All submitted pages” limits the view to URLs in your sitemap, which should only list pages you actually want indexed. A gap between submitted and indexed counts is where traffic leaks.
When you fix an issue, click Validate Fix. Google rechecks a sample, queues the affected URLs for recrawl, and marks the batch Passed once every instance clears, usually within about two weeks.

How it affects your traffic
Pages that never get indexed cannot rank, so they earn zero organic traffic no matter how strong the content is. The Page indexing report is usually the first place a technical audit looks, because a large "Crawled - currently not indexed" or "Discovered - currently not indexed" bucket points straight at crawl budget, thin content, or canonical problems that suppress whole sections of a site.
