Google Search Console (GSC)

Also called: GSC, search console

Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free tool for site owners to see how their site performs in Google Search. It reports the queries you rank for, plus clicks, impressions, average position, and which of your pages Google has crawled and indexed.

What GSC actually shows you

GSC does two jobs. The Performance report tracks four numbers over time: clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. Google defines an impression as how often someone saw a link to your site on Google, and position as the relative ranking of that link, where 1 is the topmost spot. You can break every metric down by query, page, country, device, or search appearance, so you can see which searches and which URLs actually drive traffic.

The other half is indexing. The Page indexing report (formerly index coverage) lists which of your URLs Google indexed or tried to index, and flags the ones it skipped. The URL Inspection tool shows the live index status of a single page and lets you request a crawl once you have fixed an issue.

It is free. You verify ownership of a property before Google grants full access, then it collects data from that point forward. You do not have to log in daily either, because Google emails you when it detects a problem. For teams tracking AI search, GSC is still the aggregate record of the clicks Google Search sends you, which makes it the baseline you measure everything else against.

How it affects your traffic

GSC is the first data source any real SEO audit opens, because it is the only place with Google's own record of your clicks, impressions, and positions. The patterns there point straight to fixable problems: pages with high impressions but low CTR need better titles, queries sitting at position 8 to 15 are within reach of page one, and URLs missing from the Page indexing report earn nothing. A structured SEO audit reads those signals against your indexing status and turns them into a prioritized fix list.
