index coverage

Also called: coverage report, page indexing report

Index coverage is the state of which pages on your site Google has actually indexed versus excluded, reported in Google Search Console's Page indexing report (formerly the Index Coverage report). It shows how many URLs are indexed, how many are not, and the reason attached to each exclusion.

Google renamed this report to Page indexing (find it under Indexing then Pages), but the job is the same. It sorts your URLs into Indexed and Not indexed buckets and attaches a reason to every excluded page.

What the report tells you

Common Not indexed reasons include URL marked 'noindex', pages blocked by robots.txt, server errors (5xx), 404 responses, redirect errors, soft 404s, and duplicates where Google picked a different canonical. A page that is not indexed cannot appear in search or earn a click, so a gap between the URLs you publish and the URLs Google indexes is lost reach.

The report also tracks indexed page counts over time and lets you validate a fix, after which Google recrawls the affected URLs and confirms the issue is cleared (validation can take up to about two weeks). Practitioners pair it with the URL Inspection tool to confirm the exact cause on a specific page before touching anything.

Not every URL should be indexed. Faceted filters, tag archives, thank-you pages, and staging URLs are fine to exclude. The signal to watch is your money pages and canonical content sitting in the Not indexed list. Example: a services page flagged “URL marked ‘noindex’” usually means a stray meta tag or a plugin setting is quietly keeping a page you care about out of Google entirely.

How it affects your traffic

Index coverage is one of the first things an SEO audit checks, because a page Google never indexed has zero chance of ranking no matter how good the content is. If service or product URLs sit under Not indexed, you are leaving traffic on the table that costs nothing extra to recover. An audit maps every excluded URL to its cause, prioritizes the canonical pages that should be indexed, and hands you a fix list (remove stray noindex, unblock robots.txt, resolve soft 404s) that converts crawled-but-excluded pages into indexed, rankable ones.
