The intrusive interstitials penalty is a Google ranking signal that demotes pages hiding their main content behind disruptive pop-ups, overlays, or standalone interstitials, especially on mobile. It launched January 10, 2017 and remains current Google guidance.
Despite the word “penalty,” this is not a manual action a reviewer applies. It is an algorithmic demotion baked into how Google ranks mobile results. Google’s own docs put it plainly: interstitials and dialogs that obstruct content make it hard for search engines to understand it, which may lead to poor search performance.
What counts as intrusive
Google flagged three patterns when the signal launched:
- A pop-up that covers the main content right after a user arrives from search, or while they read.
- A standalone interstitial the user must dismiss before the content loads.
- An above-the-fold layout that looks like an interstitial, with the real content pushed below.
Not everything trips it. Google carves out clear exceptions: cookie and age-verification notices required by law, login dialogs for non-indexable content (email, paywalled pages), and banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space and are easily dismissed.
The fix is rarely to kill your pop-up outright. Swap a full-screen overlay for a slim, dismissible banner, delay the prompt until after some engagement, or gate it behind a scroll. A small position: fixed bar occupying a thin strip passes; a full-viewport modal on entry does not.
