A knowledge graph is a structured database of real-world entities (people, places, organizations, things) and the relationships between them, stored as nodes connected by edges. Google's Knowledge Graph is the best-known example, powering entity understanding, disambiguation, and knowledge panels in Search.
Google launched its Knowledge Graph in May 2012 under the tagline “things, not strings,” a shift from matching keyword strings to understanding real-world things and how they connect. At launch it held more than 500 million objects and over 3.5 billion facts, seeded from public sources like Wikipedia, Freebase, and the CIA World Factbook, then expanded well beyond them.
Each entity is a node, and each relationship is an edge. “Albert Einstein” links to “physicist,” to “Ulm” (birthplace), and to “theory of relativity.” Google uses this structure to do three things in Search: disambiguate similar names (Taj Mahal the monument versus the musician), summarize key facts in a knowledge panel, and surface related things you have not asked about yet.
