knowledge panel

Also called: knowledge card, knowledge box, instant answer card

A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows for a known entity (a person, place, organization, or thing), usually to the right of desktop results or at the top on mobile. Google generates it automatically from its Knowledge Graph and content sourced across the web.

Where the data comes from

Google launched the Knowledge Graph in May 2012 as a database of “things, not strings.” At launch it held more than 500 million objects and over 3.5 billion facts, rooted in public sources like Freebase, Wikipedia, and the CIA World Factbook. A knowledge panel is the visible surface of that graph. Google assembles one automatically when it has enough corroborated information about an entity, then pulls the summary, image, and facts from the open web plus licensed data and verified subjects.

You cannot buy a panel or add a snippet of markup that forces one. You earn it by becoming an entity Google can resolve without ambiguity. In practice that means a consistent name and description repeated across trustworthy places: an About page, structured data, reputable press, a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry where one is warranted, and a Google Business Profile for local entities. Once a panel exists, a verified subject or official representative can claim it and suggest edits that override the automatically sourced details.

Example: search a well-known SaaS brand and you often see its logo, founding year, founders, and social links in a right-rail box. That box is a knowledge panel, stitched together from Wikipedia, the company’s own structured data, and other pages that agree on the same facts. When sources disagree or Google is not confident about who the entity is, no panel appears.

How it affects your traffic

A knowledge panel is the clearest sign that Google understands your brand as a distinct entity, not just a string of words. That same entity understanding now feeds AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, which lean on corroborated facts and entity graphs to decide who to cite. If Google cannot resolve your brand cleanly, you tend to be missing from both the right rail and AI answers. Our SEO Consulting work audits your entity footprint (structured data, About and founder pages, third-party corroboration, Business Profile) and maps the path to a panel and to steadier AI citations.
