lifetime value (LTV)

Also called: customer lifetime value, LTV, CLV, CLTV

Lifetime value (LTV), also called customer lifetime value, is the total revenue or profit a business can expect from one customer over the whole relationship. A common formula is average purchase value multiplied by purchase frequency and average customer lifespan.

How LTV is calculated

The simplest model multiplies three numbers: average purchase value, purchase frequency, and customer lifespan. A coffee subscription at $20/month kept for an average of 30 months gives an LTV of $600 in revenue. Swap revenue for gross margin and you get a profit-based LTV, which is the number that tells you how much you can afford to spend acquiring a customer.

That comparison is the point. LTV only means something next to customer acquisition cost (CAC). A common rule of thumb is that LTV should be a healthy multiple of CAC; when acquisition costs creep past what a customer returns, growth burns cash. HubSpot notes that small retention gains compound quickly, since keeping existing customers is usually cheaper than winning new ones.

Analytics tools now surface LTV directly. Google Analytics 4 includes a User lifetime exploration that sums every revenue-generating event per user since first acquisition, then breaks it down by acquisition source. One caveat worth knowing: percentile LTV often reads as zero because most users never purchase, so you segment to buyers before the number is useful. LTV also depends on purchase or conversion events being tracked correctly, which is where a lot of setups quietly fail.

How it affects your traffic

If you don't know your LTV, you can't tell whether organic traffic is worth chasing. A keyword with modest volume that pulls in high-LTV buyers can be worth more than a high-volume term that attracts one-time bargain hunters. An SEO audit connects the two: it maps which pages and queries bring in the customers who actually stick around, so you spend budget on the rankings that pay back. Once LTV is set against acquisition cost, organic search usually looks like one of the cheaper channels, which strengthens the case for investing in it.
