conversion rate
Also called: CVR, session conversion rate, user conversion rate, key event rate
Conversion rate is the percentage of visits or visitors that complete a desired action, calculated as conversions divided by sessions (or users) times 100. In Google Analytics 4 the same metric now appears as session key event rate and user key event rate.
How it’s calculated
The formula is plain: conversion rate = (conversions / sessions) × 100. Swap the denominator to users when you care about people rather than visits. Example: 40 lead-form submissions across 2,000 organic sessions is a 2% session conversion rate.
The denominator matters. Session-based rates answer how often a visit converts. User-based rates answer how often a person eventually converts, counting someone once even if they return five times. GA4 reports both, as session key event rate and user key event rate, after Google renamed “conversions” to “key events.” Google’s own wording for the older metric was “the percentage of sessions in which any conversion event was triggered.”
What counts as a conversion is a choice, not a fact. A purchase, a lead form, a demo booking, and a newsletter signup each produce a different rate, so a number only means something next to its event and its traffic source. A blended site-wide figure hides more than it shows. Segment by channel (organic vs paid), by landing page, and by intent. A high-intent bottom-funnel page and a top-funnel blog post should not be held to the same bar.
How it affects your traffic
Rankings and organic sessions only pay off if they convert. A page can sit at position 3 and still earn nothing when its conversion rate is broken. Slow load, weak mobile layout, buried calls to action, intent mismatch, and thin trust signals all drag the rate down, and each is exactly what a technical and on-page review surfaces. Fixing them pulls more revenue from traffic you already have, which costs less than chasing new clicks. Our SEO Audit maps the crawl, content, and UX issues suppressing your conversion rate.
