link velocity

Also called: link acquisition rate, backlink velocity

Link velocity is the rate at which a site gains or loses backlinks over time, usually counted as new links or referring domains per month. Google's John Mueller and Gary Illyes say it is not a standalone ranking factor; what matters is link quality and how the links were acquired.

Link velocity gets treated as a hard rule in SEO forums, but the evidence is thinner than the reputation. The idea traces to a 2003 Google patent, “Information Retrieval Based on Historical Data” (US7346839B2), which describes tracking the dates links appear and disappear and the rate at which links are created. The patent flags a large spike in backlinks as ambiguous: it can mean a real topical event (the example given is the CDC site gaining links fast after an outbreak) or an attempt to spam by exchanging, buying, or gaining links “without editorial discretion.”

The math is simple. Take referring domains at the end of two consecutive months and subtract:

velocity = ref_domains(month_2) - ref_domains(month_1)

Is it a ranking factor?

Google’s public line is no. John Mueller: “It’s not so much a matter of how many links you get in which time period. It’s really just… if these are links that are unnatural or from our point of view problematic then they would be problematic.” Gary Illyes dismissed the concept in a Reddit AMA, asking people not to “focus that much on links and made up terms like link velocity.” The thing Google reacts to is quality and intent, not raw speed.

Practical read: a natural profile grows unevenly. A brand new site jumping from 0 to 500 links in a week, all exact-match commercial anchors from low-quality domains, looks manipulative not because of the count but because the pattern reads as bought. Earn links steadily from relevant sources and velocity takes care of itself.

How it affects your traffic

The practical risk is not velocity itself but the kind of links a fast spike usually implies. A burst of paid or low-quality links can get discounted by Google's link spam systems, or draw a manual action, erasing the rankings and the budget behind them. Steady acquisition from relevant, editorial sources is what compounds into stable organic traffic. That pacing and source-vetting is exactly what a managed link building program handles, so link growth reads as earned rather than bought.
