An LLM citation is a source link that an AI assistant attributes part of its answer to, surfaced inline or in a sources panel when the model draws on live web results (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews). Earning one places your page inside the AI answer itself, not just the blue-link list.
Why some pages get cited and others don’t
Citations only appear when the model runs a live retrieval step. ChatGPT, for example, shows a Sources panel and inline links only when it actually searched the web. Answers pulled from training memory alone carry no source panel, and any reference-looking text there is not a verified retrieval link (per OpenAI’s own help docs).
Once retrieval runs, the engine pulls a batch of candidate pages and attributes specific sentences to specific URLs, citing only a handful of what it fetched. Pages that get picked tend to share traits: a direct, self-contained passage that answers the question, clean structure the crawler can parse, and a domain the engine treats as credible for that claim.
The GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) measured this directly. Adding relevant quotations, statistics, and cited sources to a page raised its visibility in generative-engine answers by up to roughly 40% on their position-adjusted metric, while pure fluency edits helped less. Citation is earned at the passage level, not the domain level.
One nuance worth internalizing: getting crawled is not getting cited. An AI crawler can fetch your page and the model can still attribute the answer to a competitor whose passage was cleaner and easier to lift. Track mentions and citations, not just crawler hits.
