measurement ID
Also called: GA4 measurement ID, Google tag ID, G- ID
A measurement ID is the unique identifier GA4 assigns to a web data stream, formatted as "G-" followed by letters and numbers (for example, G-PSW1MY7HB4). It tells the Google tag which GA4 property and stream to send your website's data to.
Where it fits in GA4
A GA4 property can hold several data streams (a website, an iOS app, an Android app). The measurement ID names one web stream. When your Google tag loads, it reads that G- value and routes hits to the matching stream and property. Google’s docs treat the measurement ID as the same value as the Google tag ID, so gtag('config', 'G-XXXXXXX') and the ID you paste into Google Tag Manager are the same string.
Two nearby identifiers cause confusion. The stream ID is a separate numeric value GA4 uses internally to label the stream; you rarely touch it. The property ID (a plain number like 123456789) sits one level up and is what the Analytics API and BigQuery export reference. An ID starting with AW- belongs to Google Ads, not Analytics.
You find it under Admin, then Data streams, then the stream’s details, and you need Editor access or above. One clean install means one measurement ID firing once per page load. Two copies of the same tag, or a leftover Universal Analytics UA- snippet still on the page, produce double-counted sessions and inflated event totals that quietly distort every report built on top of them.
How it affects your traffic
If your measurement ID is missing, duplicated, or pointing at the wrong stream, your organic traffic data is either absent or double-counted, and no decision built on it can be trusted. A technical SEO audit checks that exactly one correct G- tag fires on every page, that it survives across templates and consent states, and that events land in the right property. That is the difference between measuring real search growth and chasing phantom numbers.
