Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
Also called: google analytics 4, GA4
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's analytics platform that measures website and app activity with an event-based data model, where every interaction (pageview, scroll, click, purchase) is recorded as an event. It replaced Universal Analytics, which stopped processing data on July 1, 2023.
How GA4 structures data
Every hit in GA4 is an event with parameters attached, not the page-centric session of the old model. Google groups events into four tiers: automatically collected (first_visit, session_start, user_engagement), enhanced measurement (scroll, click, file_download, toggled on in the interface), recommended (standardized names like purchase, sign_up, and login that unlock prebuilt reports), and custom events you define when nothing else fits.
GA4 merges website and app data into one property and adds privacy controls Google describes as cookieless measurement plus behavioral and key event modeling, which estimate activity when consent is declined. Conversions are recorded as key events rather than the goal setup Universal Analytics used.
One practical trap: custom event parameters do not appear in standard reports until you register them as custom dimensions, so a lot of data that is technically being collected stays invisible until someone configures it.
For SEO, the report that matters is Traffic acquisition filtered to the Organic Search channel, paired with the landing page dimension. That combination shows which URLs bring organic visits, how engaged those visitors are, and which pages drive key events, which is the difference between “we rank” and “ranking makes money.”
How it affects your traffic
GA4 is where you confirm whether SEO work actually moves the number that matters: organic sessions, engaged sessions, and key events by landing page. An SEO audit leans on GA4's organic channel and landing page reports to find pages that quietly lost traffic, pages with weak engagement, and pages that stopped converting, then ties each back to a fixable cause. When GA4 is misconfigured (no key events defined, wrong channel grouping, unregistered custom dimensions), the ROI of your organic work is invisible and easy to underfund. Getting the tracking clean is usually step one of any audit, because every later recommendation is measured against this data.
