meta description length
Also called: meta description character limit, meta description size
Meta description length is how long a page's meta description tag is, measured in characters or pixels. Google sets no fixed limit and truncates the snippet to fit the device width, but common practice targets about 155 to 160 characters on desktop and roughly 120 on mobile so the summary shows in full.
Characters vs pixels
Google’s documentation is blunt: “There’s no limit on how long a meta description can be,” and the snippet is “truncated in Google Search results as needed, typically to fit the device width.” The real constraint is pixel width, not a character count. Desktop results cut off near 920 to 1,000 pixels (roughly 155 to 160 characters); mobile is tighter, around 120. Wide glyphs (W, M, capitals) burn that space faster than narrow ones (i, l, t), so two 158-character descriptions can truncate at different points.
There is a bigger catch: Google often ignores what you write. An Ahrefs study of 20,000 keywords found Google rewrote the meta description 62.78% of the time, and about 25% of top-ranking pages had no description at all. Length barely moved that number. Oversized descriptions were rewritten 61.46% of the time versus 63.69% for correctly sized ones.
Practical takeaway: front-load the useful part. Put the click-worthy detail (price, location, benefit, date) inside the first ~120 characters so it survives on mobile and in rewritten snippets. Length is not a ranking factor, so do not chase a plugin’s green light. Write a clear, honest summary of the page.

Meta descriptions do not lift rankings, but they shape click-through rate, which decides how much of an existing ranking turns into actual visits. A vague or mid-word truncated snippet on a page already sitting on page one quietly leaves clicks on the table. Auditing and rewriting descriptions site-wide (front-loaded, specific, one unique summary per URL) is routine on-page work, which our On-Page SEO service handles alongside title tags, headings, and internal linking.
