Keywords & SERP

serp snippet

Also called: search snippet, listing snippet, meta snippet

A SERP snippet is a single organic search result as it appears on the results page: the clickable title link, the page URL, and a short description that Google usually generates automatically from the page's content.

Google assembles each snippet from a few moving parts, and most of them are not fully in your hands. The title link is drawn from sources like your <title> element, on-page headings such as <h1>, og:title, and even anchor text pointing at the page, then truncated to fit the device width rather than a fixed character count. The description below it is “primarily” pulled from the page content itself; Google falls back to your meta description only when it “describes the page better than other parts of the content.”

Two consequences follow. First, the same URL can show different snippets for different queries, because Google surfaces the passage most relevant to each search. Search for “returns policy” and you may see one sentence; search for “shipping cost” on the same page and you get another. Second, keyword-stuffed descriptions are “less likely to be displayed as a snippet,” so writing them as filler backfires.

What you can actually control

You cannot force an exact snippet, but you have levers:

Treat the snippet as ad copy you influence indirectly: clear titles, honest descriptions, and a lead paragraph that answers the query in one liftable sentence near the top.

How it affects your traffic

Your snippet is the storefront for every organic listing: it decides whether an impression becomes a click. Two pages can rank in the same spot yet earn very different traffic because one has a title and description that match intent and the other reads like boilerplate. A consultant audits how your key pages actually render across real queries, spots the titles Google is rewriting and the descriptions it is ignoring, then rewrites titles, descriptions, and lead paragraphs so the snippet earns the click. That is where our SEO Consulting work turns rankings you already hold into more sessions, without publishing a single new page.
