Mobilegeddon
Also called: mobile friendly update, mobile-friendly update
Mobilegeddon is the nickname for Google's April 21, 2015 mobile-friendly update, which boosted the ranking of mobile-optimized pages in mobile search results. It worked page by page and affected only searches from mobile devices, not tablets or desktop.
The name was press coinage, not Google’s. Google called it the “mobile-friendly update” and pre-announced it on February 26, 2015, roughly two months before the April 21 rollout, so sites had time to prepare. The panic baked into the name oversold the day-one impact, but the direction was real and permanent.
How the signal actually worked
Three details from Google’s own guidance still matter:
- Page level, not site level. If ten pages passed the mobile test and the rest failed, only those ten got the lift.
- Boolean, not graded. A page was either mobile-friendly or it was not. There were no partial scores.
- Real time. The boost applied as soon as Google recrawled a page, so a fix could pay off within days instead of waiting for a batch refresh.
It touched only mobile searches, across all languages and regions, and left tablet and desktop results alone. Google also stressed that query relevance still outweighed mobile-friendliness, so a highly relevant non-mobile page could still beat a weak mobile one.
Mobilegeddon was the first step, not the finish line. Google strengthened the signal with a second boost in May 2016, then moved the whole index to mobile-first crawling, a shift it confirmed complete in 2023. Today the mobile version of a page is the version Google indexes and ranks by default, so passing a mobile check is table stakes rather than an edge.
How it affects your traffic
If your traffic dipped after April 2015 and never fully recovered, an outdated mobile layout is a prime suspect, and it matters more now that Google indexes the mobile version of every page by default. A page that renders cleanly on desktop but breaks on a phone can quietly lose rankings you would otherwise hold. An SEO consulting engagement audits your pages against current mobile-friendly and Core Web Vitals criteria, then prioritizes fixes by the traffic at risk, so effort goes where it moves revenue instead of chasing every warning.
