navigational intent

Also called: navigational search intent, go queries, navigational keyword, website queries

Navigational intent is when a searcher already has a specific site or page in mind and queries to reach it, like typing a brand name or "reddit login" instead of the full URL. Google's rater guidelines call these Website queries, and they usually have one right answer: the brand's own page.

Andrei Broder’s 2002 paper “A Taxonomy of Web Search” split queries into three intents: navigational, informational, and transactional. Navigational is the one where the person is not trying to learn or buy anything. They just want to land on a site they already know exists. Broder’s own examples were things like Greyhound Bus (target: greyhound.com) and compaq. Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines use the same idea under a different label, “Website queries,” and add that this single target page is the result Google tries to put at the top. Their current examples include tiktok, yahoo mail, and walmart.com.

Two traits that make it different

First, there is usually only one correct result, the official destination, so a normal blog post has almost no chance of outranking it. Broder noted navigational queries have one “right” result up to aliases. Second, most navigational queries are branded: they carry a company, product, or app name. That makes them a decent proxy for demand you have already earned. If people search your name to find you, you have brand equity. If they search a competitor’s name, you don’t have theirs yet.

The common mistake is treating a navigational query like an informational one and writing content to chase it. If the query is notion login, Google wants the login page, not a “how to log in to Notion” article. Mapping intent correctly before you build a page saves the effort you would otherwise waste ranking for a result Google will never give you.

How it affects your traffic

Navigational demand is your most defensible traffic, but only if you own the result. A consultant maps which of your target queries are navigational versus informational, so you stop writing articles for terms where Google only rewards a homepage and instead lock down your own branded SERP with sitelinks, schema, and clean site structure. As AI assistants field more brand-name questions, the same work decides whether ChatGPT or an AI Overview sends someone to your official page or to an aggregator sitting on top of your name. Our SEO Consulting engagement audits your branded and navigational footprint and closes the gaps competitors quietly exploit.
