Search intent, keyword research and the features that make up a modern results page.

branded keyword A branded keyword (or branded query) is a search that includes your brand name, a variation or misspelling of it, or a product or service unique to your brand (for example, "Gmail" for Google). Every search that does not reference your brand is a non-branded keyword.
clicks per search Clicks per search (CPS) is the average number of search-result clicks a keyword generates per search, calculated as total clicks divided by search volume. A CPS above 1 means people click several results per query; below 1 means many searches end without any click.
commercial intent Commercial intent is the search intent behind queries where someone is researching or comparing products and services before buying, signaled by modifiers like "best," "review," "vs," and "top." It sits between informational and transactional intent in the buyer's journey.
cost per click Cost per click (CPC) is the price an advertiser pays each time someone clicks their ad. In Google Ads, your actual CPC is the final amount charged per click, usually less than your maximum bid. In SEO, CPC is used as a proxy for a keyword's commercial value.
discussions and forums Discussions and forums is a Google search feature that surfaces a block of threads from Reddit, Quora, and other community forums alongside regular results. It shows first-hand user perspectives for a query, and Reddit dominates the listings it displays.
faq rich result A FAQ rich result was an expandable list of question-and-answer pairs Google showed beneath a search result, generated from FAQPage structured data. Google restricted it to government and health sites in 2023 and stopped showing it in Search entirely on May 7, 2026.
featured snippet A featured snippet is a boxed answer Google lifts from a web page and displays at the top of the results, above the standard organic links. Google's systems select it automatically to answer a query directly, and you cannot mark up or submit a page to win one.
global search volume Global search volume is the total estimated number of monthly searches a keyword gets, summed across every country rather than one market. SEO tools calculate it by adding up the keyword's regional search volumes, each estimated from Google Keyword Planner data blended with clickstream models.
google autocomplete Google Autocomplete is the Search feature that predicts and displays likely query completions as you type. Predictions reflect real, common, and trending searches, filtered by your language and location. They speed up searching and are not assertions of fact or ranked search results.
Google Trends Google Trends is a free Google tool that charts the relative popularity of search queries over time and by region on a 0 to 100 index, not as raw search volume. Each data point is divided by total searches for its time and place, so the numbers compare interest between terms rather than counting searches.
howto rich result A HowTo rich result was a Google Search feature that displayed step-by-step instructions (built from HowTo structured data) directly under a listing. Google deprecated it: since September 2023 HowTo rich results no longer appear, and Google now ignores HowTo markup.
image pack An image pack is a cluster of image thumbnails Google embeds inside a normal web search results page, usually as a horizontal row or grid, pulled from images on already-indexed pages. Tapping one opens Google Images and can send the visitor to the page hosting that image.
informational intent Informational intent is the goal behind a search where the user wants to learn something or find information, rather than buy or reach a specific site. Google's rater guidelines call these "Know" queries. Examples: "how does SEO work" or "what is a canonical tag."
keyword A keyword is the word or phrase a person types into a search engine, and the term an SEO chooses to target on a page so it ranks for that search. In practice the keyword is the marketer's chosen target, while the exact wording a user types is called the search query.
keyword cannibalization Keyword cannibalization is when two or more pages on the same site compete for the same query, so ranking signals that should concentrate on one page get split across several. The usual result is weaker, fluctuating rankings than a single focused page would earn.
keyword clustering Keyword clustering is the practice of grouping search queries that share the same intent (usually confirmed by overlapping Google results) so each group maps to a single page. It lets one page rank for many related terms instead of splitting them across pages that compete with each other.
keyword density Keyword density is the percentage of times a target keyword appears relative to the total word count on a page, calculated as (keyword occurrences / total words) x 100. Google uses no optimal density and treats forced repetition as keyword stuffing, a spam policy violation.
keyword difficulty Keyword difficulty (KD) is a 0 to 100 score that estimates how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a given term. Each SEO tool calculates it differently, mostly from the backlink strength of the pages already ranking in the top 10.
keyword efficiency index Keyword Efficiency Index (KEI) is a legacy SEO metric that scores a keyword's opportunity by dividing its search volume (squared) by the number of competing pages. A higher KEI flags keywords with strong demand and light competition, so it works as a fast way to shortlist targets.
keyword gap A keyword gap analysis compares your site's keyword rankings against competitors to surface the search terms they rank for and you don't. It turns that overlap into a prioritized list of content and page opportunities you are currently missing.
keyword intent Keyword intent (also called search intent) is the goal a searcher is trying to reach with a query, such as finding information, reaching a specific site, or making a purchase. Google's rater guidelines sort queries into four intents: Know, Do, Website, and Visit-in-person.
keyword mapping Keyword mapping is assigning each target keyword, or keyword cluster, to one specific page on your site so every query has a single owner. It stops two pages competing for the same term and exposes gaps where no page covers a query yet.
keyword modifier A keyword modifier is a word or phrase added to a base keyword to make it more specific, such as "best," "near me," "cheap," or a year. Modifiers narrow search intent and turn a broad head term into a longer, lower-competition long-tail query.
keyword optimization Keyword optimization is aligning a page's content, title, headings, and links with the words people actually search for, so both search engines and readers can tell what the page is about. Overdoing it (keyword stuffing) violates Google's spam policies.
keyword ranking Keyword ranking is the position a page occupies in a search engine's organic results for a specific query, where 1 is the top spot. Google assigns it per query using automated ranking systems, so the same page can rank differently by user, location, and device.
keyword research Keyword research is the process of discovering, validating, and prioritizing the search terms your audience actually types into search engines, so you can decide which pages are worth building and how to shape each one around real demand and intent.
keyword seasonality Keyword seasonality is the predictable, recurring rise and fall of a keyword's search volume at certain times of the year, driven by holidays, weather, events, or buying cycles. Spotting it in tools like Google Trends lets you time content to rank before demand peaks, not after.
keyword stuffing Keyword stuffing is loading a web page with repeated keywords or numbers to try to manipulate its Google ranking. Google names it a spam policy violation, and stuffed pages can rank lower or drop out of results entirely.
knowledge panel A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows for a known entity (a person, place, organization, or thing), usually to the right of desktop results or at the top on mobile. Google generates it automatically from its Knowledge Graph and content sourced across the web.
long-tail keyword A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search query that gets low individual search volume but carries clearer intent and faces less competition than broad, high-volume "head" terms.
lsi keywords LSI keywords is a popular SEO term for words and phrases topically related to your main keyword. The name is a misnomer: real latent semantic indexing is a document-retrieval method patented in 1988 and published in 1990, and Google has said it does not use "LSI keywords" as a ranking factor.
mid-tail keyword A mid-tail keyword (also called a body or medium-tail keyword) is a search query of moderate specificity sitting between broad, high-volume head terms and narrow, low-volume long-tail terms. It carries moderate search volume and competition, with clearer intent than a head term.
money keyword A money keyword is a high-intent search term whose searchers are close to buying, so ranking for it tends to generate sales or leads rather than just traffic. These map to Google's transactional "Do" queries (buy, order, hire) and commercial-investigation terms (best, review, compare, price).
navigational intent Navigational intent is when a searcher already has a specific site or page in mind and queries to reach it, like typing a brand name or "reddit login" instead of the full URL. Google's rater guidelines call these Website queries, and they usually have one right answer: the brand's own page.
non-branded keyword A non-branded keyword is a search query that contains no brand name and describes a generic need instead (for example "running shoes" or "seo agency"). It captures demand from people who do not yet know your company, which makes it the main lever for winning net-new organic traffic.
organic result An organic result is an unpaid listing on a search results page that Google ranks purely by relevance and quality, with no payment involved. It sits apart from ads, which carry a "Sponsored" label, and is earned through SEO rather than bought.
paid result A paid result (also called a search ad or sponsored result) is an advertisement in a search engine results page that an advertiser pays to place there, marked "Sponsored" to set it apart from free organic results. Its position and price come from an ad auction, not from ranking algorithms.
parent topic In Ahrefs, the parent topic is the broader keyword that sends the most search traffic to the page currently ranking #1 for your target keyword. It signals whether you can cover a wider topic on one page instead of building a separate page for the narrow variant.
people also ask People Also Ask (PAA) is an expandable Google search feature that shows a list of related questions. Clicking one reveals a short answer pulled from a web page, along with that page's title and link. The answers come from the same system that powers featured snippets.
people also search for People also search for (PASF) is a Google results feature that shows a cluster of six to eight related search suggestions, usually surfaced after a user clicks a result and quickly returns to the SERP, a signal their intent was not met.
pixel rank Pixel rank (or pixel depth) measures how far down a search results page your listing actually appears, counted in pixels from the top, rather than its ordinal position. It reflects real on-screen depth once ads, AI Overviews, and other SERP features stack above you.
primary keyword A primary keyword is the single main search term a page is built to rank for. It sets the page's core topic and shapes the title, URL, and headings, while secondary keywords add supporting context and depth.
query deserves freshness Query deserves freshness (QDF) is an SEO industry name for Google boosting recent content when a query is time-sensitive. When search volume and news coverage spike for a topic, Google temporarily weights recency more heavily, so newer pages can outrank older ones.
question keywords Question keywords are search queries phrased as full questions, usually starting with who, what, when, where, why, or how (for example, "how does SEO work"). They signal clear informational intent and often trigger featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and answers in AI search.
rank tracking Rank tracking is the ongoing measurement of where your pages appear in search results for a set of target keywords, recorded over time and broken out by location and device so you can see positions rise or fall and act on the movement.
related keywords Related keywords are words and phrases semantically or contextually tied to a seed keyword, such as synonyms, subtopics, and adjacent queries people search alongside it. Search engines use these associations to understand a page's meaning and to match content to queries that never contain the exact target term.
related searches Related searches are the cluster of suggested alternative queries Google shows near the bottom of a search results page. Google generates them automatically from your original query and other things people have searched for, and site owners cannot control which terms appear.
review snippet A review snippet is the star rating, numeric score, and review count Google can show beneath a search result. It is generated from Review or AggregateRating structured data on the page and appears only for eligible content like products, recipes, books, and software apps.
search demand Search demand is the total volume of searches people make for a topic over a given period and place. Plotted by volume it forms the search demand curve: a few high-volume "head" terms, then a long "tail" of many low-volume queries that together often outweigh the head.
search intent Search intent is the underlying goal behind a search query: what the searcher actually wants to do. It is commonly sorted into four types (informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional), and matching a page to the dominant intent is one of the strongest factors in whether it ranks.
search query A search query is the exact text a person types or speaks into a search engine to find something. It differs from a keyword: the keyword is the abstracted target you optimize for, while the query is the raw, often misspelled or padded string a real user actually enters.
search volume Search volume is the estimated average number of times people search a given keyword per month in a chosen location, usually averaged over the past 12 months. It is an estimate, not an exact count, and tools report it as a rounded figure or a range (for example 1K to 10K).
seed keyword A seed keyword is a short, broad term (usually one or two words) that you enter into a keyword research tool to generate more specific keyword ideas. It is the starting point of research, not a phrase you optimize a page for directly.
semantic keywords Semantic keywords are words and phrases conceptually related to a page's main topic (synonyms, subtopics, entities, related questions) that help search engines confirm what the page is about. They signal topical depth so a page ranks for meaning, not just exact matches.
serp A SERP (search engine results page) is the page a search engine returns for a query. It combines organic listings, paid ads, and SERP features like featured snippets, image packs, and AI Overviews, and Google changes which features appear based on what each query needs.
serp analysis SERP analysis is the practice of examining the live results page for a target query (the ranking pages, SERP features, and result formats) to read the dominant search intent, judge how competitive the keyword is, and decide what kind of content Google actually rewards for it.
serp carousel A SERP carousel is a horizontally scrollable row of results or entities in Google Search that users swipe through, mostly on mobile. It appears either as a host carousel built from one site's ItemList structured data, or as a Google-assembled strip such as Top Stories, images, videos, or popular products.
serp feature A SERP feature is any element on a Google results page beyond the standard ten organic blue-link listings, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, knowledge panels, image packs, and AI Overviews. Google documents the building blocks of its results page in a "Visual Elements gallery" and spells out which parts site owners can influence.
serp overlap SERP overlap is the share of ranking URLs that two keywords have in common in Google's top results. When the same pages rank for both queries, they signal the same search intent and should target one page; when overlap is low, each keyword needs its own page.
serp snippet A SERP snippet is a single organic search result as it appears on the results page: the clickable title link, the page URL, and a short description that Google usually generates automatically from the page's content.
shopping results Shopping results are the product listings Google shows in search, each with a photo, price, retailer, and rating. They appear on the main SERP, the Shopping tab, Google Images, and Lens, and can be free (organic) or paid (Sponsored ads).
short-tail keyword A short-tail keyword (also called a head term) is a broad, high-volume search query that sits at the head of the search demand curve. Because so many sites compete for these queries, they are among the hardest keywords to rank for, and their intent is broad rather than specific.
sitelinks Sitelinks are the extra links to sub-pages that Google clusters beneath a single search result, most often under a brand's homepage listing. They are generated automatically from your site's structure and internal linking, so there is no setting to add, reorder, or remove them by hand.
sitelinks search box A sitelinks search box was a Google search feature that placed a search field inside a brand's result, letting people search that site directly from the SERP. Google removed it globally on November 21, 2024, so the WebSite/SearchAction structured data that powered it no longer does anything.
target keyword A target keyword is the primary search query a page is built and optimized to rank for. It defines the page's main topic, guides its content and on-page signals, and is the term you grade that page's ranking success against.
top stories Top Stories is a carousel of fresh news articles Google shows near the top of Search results for newsworthy queries. Sites are considered automatically with no application, and placement depends on factors including relevance, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, usability, location, and language.
traffic potential Traffic potential is the total organic traffic the current #1 ranking page for a keyword receives from every keyword it ranks for, not just the one term you searched. Popularized by Ahrefs, it estimates the traffic a page could earn if it ranked #1 for that topic.
transactional intent Transactional intent is the search intent behind queries where the user wants to complete an action (buy, sign up, download, book) rather than just read. Google's rater guidelines call these "Do" queries: the searcher wants to buy, download, obtain, or interact with something.
universal search Universal search (also called blended search) is Google's practice, introduced in 2007, of mixing results from several verticals such as images, video, news, and maps into one organic results page instead of showing only ten text links.
vertical search Vertical search is search restricted to a single content type or industry (images, shopping, jobs, travel) instead of the whole web. A vertical search engine indexes and ranks only within its niche, so it returns more precise, structured results than a general search engine does.
video pack A video pack (also called a video carousel) is a group of video results Google displays together in one block on the search results page, shown as a scrollable row or column of thumbnails. Each entry shows a thumbnail, title, source site, and upload date.
zero-click search A zero-click search is a search query a user resolves without clicking any result, because the answer appears directly on the results page through a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, or similar SERP feature.
