A title tag is the HTML <title> element that sets a page's title. Google uses it as the clickable headline (the "title link") in search results, and browsers show it in the tab. It is a confirmed but minor ranking signal and the main text that wins or loses the click.
Google calls the title link one of the primary pieces of information people use to decide which result to click. It pulls that link from a few sources, but the <title> element is the main one, so every page should have its own.
What makes a good title tag
Google’s guidance is plain: write descriptive, concise text and give each page distinct wording. Skip vague labels like “Home”, and skip keyword stuffing (“Foobar, foo bar, foobars”), which Google says makes results look spammy. Brand titles concisely by adding your site name at the start or end, split off with a delimiter such as a hyphen, colon, or pipe:

Google may also rewrite the title it shows if it detects a stale, inaccurate, or boilerplate one, which is worth watching in Search Console.
On ranking, John Mueller confirmed Google still uses the title element as a signal but called it “a tiny factor.” Its real job is winning the click and telling both readers and AI systems what the page covers, which is why a sharp, intent-matched title often lifts click-through more than a small move up in position.
