search visibility
Also called: serp visibility, visibility score, seo visibility
Search visibility estimates how often and how prominently a site appears in organic search results for a tracked set of keywords, usually shown as a percentage of the clicks its rankings could capture. Tools calculate it by weighting each ranking by search volume and expected click-through rate.
How the score is built
There is no single industry formula. Every tool computes its own version, but the shared logic is the same: take the keywords you rank for, weight each ranking by its search volume and the click-through rate for that position, then add them up. A #1 spot on a high-volume term counts far more than #1 on a term nobody searches, and the weighting is non-linear because the top results capture most of the clicks.
The vendor numbers are not interchangeable. Sistrix’s Visibility Index samples a million queries (100 million data points), weights each ranking by volume and expected CTR, and spreads a fixed pool of points across every ranking domain, so it reads as an index rather than a percentage. Ahrefs frames its version as the share of clicks you actually capture: rank for a term searched 100 times, win 5 clicks, and your visibility for that term is 5%. Semrush shows a 0 to 100% Visibility % where 100% means the top spot for every tracked keyword.
Two things follow. First, a Sistrix score and a Semrush percentage measure the same idea on different scales, so never compare them side by side. Second, none of them equals traffic; they are directional. What they are good for is trend and benchmarking: watching your own line over weeks, and against competitors, on one shared keyword set.
How it affects your traffic
Visibility usually moves before sessions do, which makes it an early-warning gauge worth watching weekly. A sharp drop rarely explains itself: it can trace to lost rankings after a core update, pages slipping out of the index, a migration that broke URLs, or AI Overviews and other SERP features pushing your result below the fold. A rank tracker shows the dip but not the cause. An SEO audit isolates which pages and keywords lost ground and why, so you repair the root cause instead of chasing the symptom.
