paid traffic
Also called: paid media traffic, ppc traffic
Paid traffic is website visits that arrive because you paid for the click or impression, such as pay-per-click search ads, paid social, shopping listings, or retargeting. In Google Analytics it is grouped into channels like Paid Search and Paid Social, where the medium is cpc, ppc, or paid, as opposed to unpaid organic clicks.
Paid traffic is the counterpart to organic traffic. It covers every visit that arrives because money changed hands for the click or impression: Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising search ads, Meta and TikTok social ads, shopping listings, retargeting, and display. Organic traffic, by contrast, comes from unpaid search results, direct visits, and referrals.
How Google Analytics labels paid traffic
GA4 sorts each session into a default channel group. A visit lands in a paid group (Paid Search, Paid Social, Paid Shopping, Paid Video, Paid Other, or Cross-network) when the source is an ad platform and the medium matches Google’s paid pattern ^(.*cp.*|ppc|retargeting|paid.*)$, which catches cpc, ppc, retargeting, and anything starting with paid. Google Ads applies this automatically through auto-tagging, which appends a gclid parameter to the ad URL. If auto-tagging is off and you never tag the URLs yourself, GA4 can fail to credit those clicks as paid, blurring the split between paid and organic in your reports.
The trade-off is simple. Paid traffic is fast and controllable, but it stops the moment the budget stops and every click carries a cost. Organic traffic takes longer to build and keeps arriving after you stop spending, which is why the healthiest sites do not lean on ads alone.
How it affects your traffic
If most of your visits are paid, your growth is rented: pause the ad account and traffic falls to near zero. That is exactly when it pays to check why organic is underperforming. An SEO Audit surfaces the technical gaps, thin pages, and missing structured data that keep unpaid search from pulling its weight, so you can shift the mix toward traffic that keeps converting after the ad spend ends.
