product detail page
Also called: PDP, product page
A product detail page (PDP) is the individual web page for a single product in an ecommerce catalog, showing its images, description, price, variants, availability, and add-to-cart action. It is the core product template and the highest-intent page a shopper reaches before cart and checkout.
What sets a PDP apart
A PDP sits below your category (collection) pages in site structure and targets bottom-funnel queries: a specific model, SKU, or “[product] + buy/price/review”. Google treats it as its own indexable URL, so ranking and rich-result eligibility are decided at this level.
Google’s ecommerce docs ask for a few things on each product page: accurate Product structured data whose price and availability match what shoppers actually see, a stable canonical URL, and clear variant handling. For variants, give each color or size a crawlable URL, then canonicalize by case. If you signal the variant with a query parameter (/t-shirt?color=green), set the canonical to the same URL with the parameter omitted. If each variant has its own path (/t-shirt/green), pick one variant URL as the canonical for the group. Either way Google understands the relationship instead of flagging duplicates.
Structured data splits into two lanes. “Merchant listings” mark up pages where a shopper can buy, and can unlock price, availability, shipping, and return details in results. “Product snippets” cover non-purchase or editorial pages and lean on review data. Adding the merchant-listing properties makes a page eligible for both.
Content still decides most of it. Thin, manufacturer-copied descriptions and missing reviews leave PDPs weak in both classic search and AI answers, which lift specs and comparisons straight off the page. A PDP that spells out size, fit, materials, shipping, and returns in plain text is the unit that earns citations and clicks.
How it affects your traffic
PDPs are usually the largest page-type on an ecommerce site and the closest to purchase, so small per-page gains compound across the entire catalog. When product schema is wrong, variants cannibalize each other, or descriptions are thin, thousands of high-intent pages underperform at the same time. Our E-commerce SEO work templates the PDP so structured data, canonicals, and product content scale correctly across the catalog and stay eligible for rich results and AI citations.
