featured snippet

Also called: answer box, position zero, position zero snippet, direct answer, instant answer, rank zero, spot zero

A featured snippet is a boxed answer Google lifts from a web page and displays at the top of the results, above the standard organic links. Google's systems select it automatically to answer a query directly, and you cannot mark up or submit a page to win one.

Google reverses the usual layout for a featured snippet: the descriptive text shows first, then the page title and link. The company is blunt that selection is automatic. Its documentation states you can’t mark a page as a featured snippet; Google’s systems decide whether a page answers a query well enough to be elevated. In practice a page needs to already rank on the first page for that query to be eligible.

Because you cannot opt in, the real work is formatting. Give a clean, direct answer to a specific question near the relevant heading, then structure supporting detail as a list or table when the query implies steps or a comparison. You can opt out: the nosnippet and data-nosnippet robots controls block a page or a single passage from being used, and max-snippet limits how much text Google can show.

Why it matters in 2026

Featured snippets used to be called “position zero.” They still appear, but they now share the top of the page with AI Overviews. The same passage-level clarity that wins a snippet is what large language models pull when they assemble an AI answer, so a page built to be quotable tends to earn both. Winning the box no longer guarantees a click, since the answer is already visible, but it places your wording at the most extracted spot on the page.

How it affects your traffic

Featured snippets are the clearest on-ramp to AI answer visibility. The pages that win the answer box are consistently the ones large language models quote inside AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, so structuring content to be liftable pays off in both classic search and AI search. Our Generative Engine Optimization work targets exactly this: restructuring high-intent pages into direct, quotable answers so search engines and AI assistants pull your wording, not a competitor's. That protects visibility even as answer boxes and AI summaries absorb more clicks at the top of the results.
