Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google's original beta name for the AI-generated answer summaries shown above regular search results. Launched inside Search Labs in May 2023, the feature graduated to general release in May 2024 under a new name: AI Overviews.
From lab experiment to AI Overviews
Google introduced SGE at I/O on May 10, 2023 as an opt-in Search Labs experiment, English-only, on Chrome desktop and the Google app in the US. The pitch was to “take more of the work out of searching” by generating a snapshot answer plus follow-up questions above the ten blue links. For about a year it stayed in the lab, expanding to more query types while Google added guardrails on where it would appear.
On May 14, 2024, Google announced AI Overviews rolling out to everyone in the US, noting people had “already used AI Overviews billions of times through our experiment in Search Labs.” The rename mattered: “experience” reads as temporary, “overview” reads as a permanent fixture. The feature runs on a custom Gemini model that combines multi-step reasoning and planning with Google’s Search systems.
