search queries
Also called: queries, search terms
Search queries are the exact words and phrases people type or speak into a search engine like Google to find something. In SEO analytics, the Search Console "queries" report shows the real terms that led users to your site, alongside impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position for each one.
A query is the literal string a person searched. That is different from a keyword, which is the target term you optimize a page around. Many distinct queries (“cheap running shoes,” “running shoes under $50,” “best budget trainers”) can map to one keyword intent, which is why query data is richer than a keyword list you guessed at up front.
In Google Search Console, queries live in the Performance report. Each row groups one query and reports four metrics: impressions (how often a link to your site was shown), clicks, CTR, and average position, where position 1 is the topmost result.
The data you cannot see
A large share of query rows are hidden. Google withholds “anonymized queries,” ones not issued by more than a few dozen users over roughly two to three months, to protect searcher privacy. That is not a rounding error: an Ahrefs study of 22 billion clicks (April 2025) found about 46.77% of clicks tied to anonymized queries. So the sum of your visible query clicks will never match your chart totals, and raw exports understate your real footprint.
Read the visible rows for two things: high-impression, low-CTR queries (a title or meta rewrite recovers clicks with no new content) and “striking-distance” queries sitting at positions 5 to 15 (a nudge moves them onto page one).
How it affects your traffic
Your query report is the cheapest keyword research you own, real terms real people used to reach you, not a tool's estimate. Because roughly half of that data hides behind anonymization, raw exports mislead, but the visible rows still expose two fast wins: high-impression low-CTR queries where a title rewrite recovers clicks, and striking-distance rankings at positions 5 to 15. An SEO audit reads those rows and turns them into a prioritized fix list instead of a guess.
