short-tail keyword
Also called: head keyword, head term, fat head keyword
A short-tail keyword (also called a head term) is a broad, high-volume search query that sits at the head of the search demand curve. Because so many sites compete for these queries, they are among the hardest keywords to rank for, and their intent is broad rather than specific.
What makes a keyword “short-tail”
The label is about position on the search demand curve, not word count. Ahrefs makes the point that “restaurants near me” (three words) pulls more volume than the single word “restaurants,” yet both are head terms. What they share is scale. A term like “calculator” draws roughly 16 million searches a month in the US, and Ahrefs counts about 31,000 US queries above 100,000 monthly searches. Those live at the fat head of the curve.
Two traits follow from that volume. First, competition is steep. Ranking page one for a head term usually takes real topical authority and a strong backlink profile, which is also why these terms are expensive in paid search. Second, intent is fuzzy. Someone typing “shoes” might want to buy, compare, or just browse images, so one page rarely satisfies the full range of what searchers mean.
That is why most keyword strategies treat head terms as a destination, not a starting point. You earn the right to rank for “coffee” by first covering the specific long-tail questions around it (grind size, brew ratios, bean origins) and building depth on the topic. Head terms still matter, though: they are the seed keywords that feed the rest of your research, and they mark the topics worth owning. You can confirm the demand behind any candidate head term in Google Keyword Planner, which reports monthly search estimates and a competition level for each query.
How it affects your traffic
Chasing short-tail keywords blindly is how SEO budgets get burned. The volume is tempting, but if your domain lacks the authority to compete, you can spend months producing content that never cracks page one while easier, higher-converting long-tail terms sit untouched. Deciding which head terms are realistically winnable now, which to defer, and what long-tail sequence builds the authority to reach them is exactly the call our SEO Consulting engagements are built to make. Getting that prioritization right, including how broad terms behave differently in AI search, is usually worth more than the keywords themselves.
