spam links
Also called: spammy links, link spam, unnatural links, manipulative links, toxic links
Spam links are links created to or from a site mainly to manipulate search rankings rather than help users. Google's spam policies treat them as a violation, and systems like SpamBrain nullify the ranking credit they pass, so they add no lasting value and can trigger penalties.
What Google counts as spam links
Google’s spam policies name specific patterns: buying or selling links (money, goods, or a free product in exchange for a link), excessive “link to me and I’ll link to you” exchanges, links from low-quality directories and bookmark sites, keyword-rich links pushed through widgets or templates across many sites, forum and comment signatures stuffed with anchor text, and large-scale guest-post or advertorial campaigns run mainly for links. Automated link-generation tools fall here too.
The mechanism matters. Google’s automated systems, including its AI system SpamBrain, detect these links and neutralize them. The links are not quietly set aside: “when our systems remove the effects spammy links may have, any ranking benefit the links may have previously generated for your site is lost.” That credit does not return on its own, and in worse cases a manual action can drop a site or remove it from results entirely.
The fix Google points to is qualifying links, not hiding them. Paid, affiliate, or sponsored links should carry rel="sponsored"; user-generated links such as comments should use rel="ugc"; rel="nofollow" covers any link you don’t want to vouch for. Tagging a link this way keeps it out of ranking calculations while staying inside policy.
How it affects your traffic
Spam links don't just fail to help, they burn budget and add risk. If part of your backlink profile is bought or automated, SpamBrain can strip its credit in a single update, so any rankings leaning on those links slide with no quick way back. Editorial links earned from real, relevant sites are the ones that survive, which is the whole point of our Link Building service: placements a person would keep even if Google ignored the link. Auditing your current profile before you build more usually saves money you would otherwise spend replacing links Google already discounts.
