What a technical audit actually checks
Google Search runs in three stages: crawling, indexing, and serving. A technical audit works backward from those stages to find where a site breaks down.
The first block is discovery and access. Google finds URLs through links and sitemaps, then Googlebot fetches them and renders the page in Chrome to run JavaScript. An audit checks robots.txt rules, HTTP status codes, redirect chains, and whether important content survives rendering. A single misplaced Disallow: line can hide a whole section from search.
The second block is indexing. After a page is crawled, Google clusters duplicates, picks a canonical, and reads signals like the title and language. Audits look for accidental noindex tags, conflicting canonicals, and thin or duplicate pages that never make it into the index.
The third block is everything that affects an indexed page’s performance: Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), mobile rendering, HTTPS, and the internal linking that decides how link equity flows. Flat architecture, where key pages sit a few clicks from the home page, helps both crawlers and users.
