Topical relevance
Also called: topical depth, topical coverage, topical relevancy
Topical relevance is how closely a page or site matches the subject a searcher is looking for. Google judges it by whether your content, headings, and supporting details actually cover the topic, not just repeat the target keyword.
Google’s own explanation of ranking starts simple: “the most basic signal that information is relevant is when content contains the same keywords as your search query,” and pages rank higher when those words appear in headings or body text. But Google says it deliberately avoids pages that merely repeat a keyword, and looks for “other relevant content beyond the keyword,” such as images, videos, or a list of related items. Topical relevance is that fuller match: does the page cover what the subject actually involves?
Depth beats repetition
A page targeting running shoes for flat feet earns relevance by addressing the subtopics a reader expects (arch support, stability, pronation, sizing), not by stuffing the phrase. Put the need-to-know information first, then the supporting detail. Use clear headings so each section maps to a distinct facet of the topic.
Relevance also compounds across a site. Covering a subject and its neighboring subtopics, linked together into a cluster, signals stronger coverage than a single thin page. Internal links between related pages help Google understand what each page is about and how your content connects, which is why practitioners treat internal linking as a core relevance lever. A single broad page rarely out-ranks a site that treats the whole topic well, so the practical work is closing coverage gaps and mapping every page to a clear subject.
How it affects your traffic
Topical relevance is won on the page. If your target pages skip the subtopics searchers expect, Google reads them as thin matches and ranks deeper, more complete competitors instead. Our On-Page SEO work maps each page to the facets of its topic, tightens headings and internal links so the subject is unmistakable, and closes the coverage gaps that keep pages off the first screen of results.
