TrustRank

TrustRank is a semi-automated link-analysis algorithm, from a 2004 Yahoo/Stanford paper, that fights web spam by hand-picking a small seed set of trusted sites and propagating that trust outward through their links. Pages a few hops from trusted seeds are treated as probably legitimate; pages near spam are not.
The method comes from “Combating Web Spam with TrustRank” by Zoltan Gyongyi, Hector Garcia-Molina, and Jan Pedersen (VLDB 2004). Human reviewers approve a small seed set of clearly reputable pages. An algorithm close in spirit to PageRank then pushes a trust score outward along their outbound links. Trust attenuates with every hop and splits across a page’s links, so a site five clicks removed from a trusted seed inherits far less trust than one linked directly.
The working assumption is simple: good pages rarely link to spam, so proximity to trusted seeds is a decent proxy for being legitimate. The inverse, Anti-TrustRank, runs distrust backward from known spam seeds to flag their neighbors.
What it means for Google today
No major search engine confirms running “TrustRank” as named. Yahoo patented the underlying idea as “link-based spam detection,” and Google’s own 2006 “TrustRank” trademark covered an anti-phishing filter, not ranking (it was later abandoned). So treat the term as shorthand for the family of trust and spam signals engines use to discount manipulative links, not a public score you can read off a dashboard. The practical takeaway survives the trademark trivia: links inherit credibility from the trusted neighborhoods they come from, and that credibility fades the further a page sits from a genuinely reputable source.
