Unstructured citation
Also called: unstructured NAP mention, unstructured local citation
An unstructured citation is a mention of a business's name, address, or phone number (NAP) inside ordinary web content like a blog post, news article, or event page, rather than in a formatted business-directory listing. Search engines read these mentions as signals that a local business is real and relevant.
The difference between a structured and an unstructured citation is formatting, not worth. A structured citation lives in a directory (Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect) where the NAP sits in fixed fields. An unstructured citation is the same information scattered through prose. Whitespark’s classic example reads roughly: “The Walrus and the Carpenter is a restaurant in Seattle located at 4743 Ballard Ave N.W. Their phone number is (206) 395-9227.” The name, address, and phone all appear, but nothing sits in a template.
Why these mentions count
These mentions feed what Google calls prominence. Google’s own local ranking guidance says prominence is partly based on “info like how many websites link to your business” and other signals it gathers from across the web. A write-up in a local paper, a sponsorship page, or an industry blog tells search engines (and increasingly AI answer engines) that a real business operates where it says it does. The mention still counts without a link, though a link adds normal SEO value.
Two things decide how much an unstructured citation is worth: the relevance of the source (a local outlet, your same industry) and the authority of the domain. A mention in the city newspaper outweighs dozens of low-quality directory entries. Consistency still matters. If the address or phone in an article differs from your Google Business Profile, that mention can muddy your NAP data instead of reinforcing it, so accuracy at the source is part of the work.
How it affects your traffic
Unstructured citations move the prominence signal that decides map-pack and local-organic rankings, which is where most brick-and-mortar and service-area leads start. Earning mentions in local press, community pages, and niche blogs, with NAP that matches your Google Business Profile exactly, lifts both your visibility in Google's local results and your odds of being named in AI answers to "best [service] near me" queries. Our Local SEO work builds and cleans both structured and unstructured citations so the signals reinforce each other instead of contradicting.
