NAP consistency

Also called: NAP, name address phone consistency, citation consistency

NAP consistency means your business Name, Address, and Phone number appear in the same format across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory that lists you. Matching NAP data helps search engines trust the business is real and rank it in local search.

NAP is the trio search engines cross-reference to confirm a local business exists: its Name, Address, and Phone number. Google’s guidelines say to represent the business “as it’s consistently represented and recognized in the real world” and to give a phone number that connects to that specific location. When the same details repeat cleanly across your site, your Google Business Profile, and third-party directories, Google reads that agreement as a trust signal.

What actually breaks it

Google tolerates cosmetic differences. St. versus Street, or Ste 200 versus Suite 200, will not sink you. The damage comes from real conflicts: an old phone number still live on an old directory, a suite that moved, a call-tracking number swapped into some citations but not others. Each mismatch gives Google a reason to doubt which record is correct, and doubt costs you visibility in the local pack.

A quick example. Your site lists (415) 555-0142, but three directories still carry the number from your last office. To Google that can read as two businesses, or one it cannot verify. Fix the profile first, then align the website, then the directories.

Consistent, complete information also feeds “prominence” and “relevance,” two of the three factors Google names for local ranking (the third is distance). Matching data across the web is one of the few local signals you fully control, which is why it is worth getting exactly right before chasing anything fancier.

How it affects your traffic

For a local business, scattered NAP data quietly caps how often you surface in the map pack and "near me" searches, which is where a lot of local revenue enters. Cleaning it up is unglamorous, but it compounds: every corrected citation strengthens the same entity Google is trying to rank, instead of splitting trust across conflicting records. Our Local SEO work starts by auditing and unifying your NAP across Google Business Profile and the directories that matter, so the signals point at one clean business record.
