URL parameters

Also called: query parameters, query strings

URL parameters (query strings) are the key-value pairs added after a question mark in a URL, such as ?color=blue or ?sort=price, that pass instructions to a page. They matter for SEO because they can spawn near-duplicate or faceted URLs that waste crawl budget, split ranking signals, and bloat the index.

How parameters hurt (or help) SEO

Not all parameters are equal. Some change what the page shows (a product filter, a category ID); others do not (session IDs, utm tracking tags, Google’s srsltid). The ones that reorder or filter existing content are the risk. A shirt in five sizes and three colors can generate fifteen URLs of near-identical content, and Google has to crawl each one.

That creates three problems: wasted crawl budget spent on low-value duplicates, diluted ranking signals when links land on scattered variants instead of one page, and index bloat. Google names the first two directly, warning that filter and sort parameters can create “unnecessarily high numbers of URLs that point to identical or similar content.”

Google announced the deprecation of the Search Console URL Parameters tool in March 2022 and removed it on 26 April 2022, saying only about 1% of the configurations site owners had set were actually useful and that its crawlers now infer parameter behavior on their own. That inference is not perfect, so you still steer it. The current playbook: set a rel=“canonical” from parameter variants back to the clean URL, Disallow genuinely useless parameter paths in robots.txt, keep parameter order consistent so the same parameters always appear in the same sequence and do not split into separate URLs, avoid session IDs in URLs (use cookies instead), and never link to parameter URLs internally or list them in your XML sitemap.

How it affects your traffic

On a large e-commerce or filtered catalog, unmanaged parameters can multiply a few hundred real pages into tens of thousands of crawlable URLs, so Googlebot burns its budget on junk and new products get indexed slowly. A technical SEO audit maps which parameters generate duplicates, sets the right canonicals and robots rules, and points crawl budget back at the pages that earn revenue. That parameter cleanup is core to our Technical SEO service.
