Content & E-E-A-T

AI-generated content

Also called: AI content, AI-written content, generative AI content

AI-generated content is text, images, or other media produced with generative AI such as large language models. Google does not ban it. Search engines judge it on quality, helpfulness, and E-E-A-T, the same bar as human writing, and penalize it only when it is thin or built to manipulate rankings.

How Google actually treats it

Google’s position is about value, not authorship. Its generative-AI guidance says to “focus on accuracy, quality, and relevance, especially when automatically generating the content,” and warns that using AI “to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate Google’s spam policy on scaled content abuse.” The helpful-content documentation is blunter: if you use automation, including AI-generation, to produce content “for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings, that’s a violation of our spam policies.”

So the failure mode is not the model. It is pressing generate a thousand times and shipping the raw output. A programmatic site that spins 5,000 near-identical location pages from one template gets flagged as scaled content abuse. The same model, used to draft a single page that a subject expert then fact-checks, restructures, and backs with firsthand examples, can rank fine.

Practical read: treat AI as a drafting tool, keep a human owner who adds real experience and judgment, and disclose automation where it helps readers understand the source. Google still asks the same three questions about any page, whoever or whatever wrote it: who made it, how, and why.

How it affects your traffic

The risk is not that AI drafting hurts you, it is that unedited AI output at scale gets pages demoted or deindexed under the scaled content abuse policy, which can drag down rankings across the whole site. It also affects AI search: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews cite pages that show original detail and real expertise, not generic restated answers. Our AI SEO service uses AI for speed but keeps human review, firsthand experience, and E-E-A-T signals, so pages earn both classic rankings and AI citations. That is the difference between publishing faster and publishing content that actually gets found.
