Scaled content abuse is a Google spam policy violation: mass-producing pages (by AI, humans, or both) mainly to manipulate search rankings rather than help users. Google may rank offending sites lower or drop them from results entirely.
Google added scaled content abuse to its spam policies with the March 2024 core update. The trigger is not the tool. It is intent plus scale: producing lots of unoriginal, low-value pages to move rankings, “whether automation, humans or a combination are involved.”
What Google actually targets
Google’s own examples of the violation:
- Using generative AI to spin up many pages without adding value for users.
- Scraping feeds or search results, then synonymizing or translating to obfuscate the source.
- Stitching together content from other pages with nothing new on top.
- Spinning up multiple sites to hide the scaled nature of the content.
- Pages stuffed with keywords that make little sense to a reader.
Note what is not on that list: using AI at all. Google has said repeatedly that automation and generative AI are fine when the output is genuinely useful. A 500-page programmatic directory that answers real queries is not abuse. The same 500 pages built to blanket a keyword set, one template swapping a city name, usually is.
Enforcement is a mix of algorithmic quality signals and manual actions. A manual action for scaled content shows up in Search Console; recovery means removing or genuinely improving the offending pages, then filing reconsideration. Algorithmic suppression has no ticket to clear, so you only see it as a ranking drop after an update.
The line to watch is value per page, not pages per hour.
