average position

Also called: avg position, average rank, average serp position

Average position is a Google Search Console metric showing the mean topmost rank your page or query held across the impressions it received in a chosen period, where 1 is the highest slot. Google records a position only when the result is actually seen, so it reflects real impressions, not theoretical rank.

Search Console logs one position per query, the topmost slot your link reached in that search, then averages those per-query values across every impression in your date, country, and device scope. Google’s own example: a page seen at positions 2, 4, and 6 for one query (counted as 2) and 3, 5, and 9 for another (counted as 3) has an average position of (2 + 3) / 2 = 2.5.

Two quirks trip people up. First, a result must earn an impression to be counted. If you rank on page three but the user never scrolls there, that position is not recorded, and you may see a dash (-). This makes average position impression-weighted, not a pure ranking. Second, it is aggregated: a site-wide 12.4 hides pages sitting at #3 next to pages stuck on page two.

Why the number moved without you

Every SERP feature can occupy its own position. An AI Overview counts as a single position, and every link inside it shares that slot; carousels work the same way, with all items assigned the one position. So a classic position-one blue link can sit visually below an AI Overview, and new features can shift your average even when your ranking did not change.

Treat average position as a diagnostic, not a KPI. Localisation and personalisation reorder the SERP, so the rank you see by hand rarely matches the reported mean. Segment it by page, query, and device to find near-misses (positions 11 to 20) worth a push.

How it affects your traffic

Average position works best as a triage signal, not a scoreboard. Filtering Search Console to pages sitting in positions 8 to 20 surfaces the URLs one edit away from page-one traffic, where on-page and internal-link fixes turn impressions you already earn into clicks. An SEO audit does this segmentation for you, cross-referencing average position against clicks and CTR so you work the highest-leverage pages first instead of chasing a single blended number that hides where the real gains are.
