impressions
Also called: search impressions, serp impressions
In SEO, an impression is counted each time a link to one of your pages appears in a search result the user has seen or could have seen. Google Search Console logs an impression when your result loads on the current page of results, even if the user never scrolls to it or clicks.
Impressions sit at the very top of the search funnel. Before anyone can click your result or reach your site, Google first has to show it, and each of those showings is one impression. The counting rule has edge cases worth knowing. A standard blue link counts the moment it loads on the current page of results, whether or not the visitor scrolls down to it. But inside a carousel or an expandable block, the item usually has to be scrolled into view or expanded before it registers. Google also dedupes within a session, so scrolling away and back, or paging forward and back, does not inflate the number.
Impressions, clicks, and CTR
The three metrics chain together: CTR = clicks / impressions. Impressions are the denominator behind every click-through rate you read in Search Console.
One aggregation trap: on the main chart, data is counted by property. If two of your pages rank for the same query, that still counts as a single impression in the total. Switch to the Pages view and it aggregates per page instead, so the same query can show different impression counts depending on how you slice the report.
A page can collect thousands of impressions and almost no clicks. That is not failure, it is signal. You are visible for a query but your title, position, or intent match is off. Rising impressions with flat clicks is one of the clearest “money left on the table” patterns in the data.
How it affects your traffic
Impressions are the earliest warning system in your search data. Pages with high impressions but weak clicks are usually ranking on page two or carrying a title that does not match intent, both fixable without writing new content. An SEO audit reads these patterns across the whole site, separating queries where you are one tweak away from real traffic from queries where you are nowhere near the first page. That is how impression data becomes a prioritized fix list instead of a vanity chart.
