backlink analysis

Also called: link analysis, backlink audit, backlink profile analysis

Backlink analysis is the process of examining the inbound links pointing to a website, yours or a competitor's, to judge their quality, relevance, and risk. It reviews referring domains, anchor text, and link type to guide link building and flag potentially harmful links.

A useful analysis goes past a raw backlink count. The signals that actually matter are narrower and more diagnostic.

Google defines link spam as “the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.” So the same review that finds good links also flags the patterns that can hurt you.

Data source matters. Google Search Console’s Links report is free but, in Google’s words, shows “a sample” of links, groups them by root domain, caps tables at 1,000 rows, and does not mark whether a link is nofollow. Third-party crawlers (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) index far more and add scores like Domain Rating.

Example: a backlink gap analysis lists domains that link to several of your competitors but not to you. Those are relevant, pre-qualified prospects, which turns a passive audit into an outreach plan.

How it affects your traffic

Backlink analysis is the diagnosis step before any link building spend. It shows which pages already pull authority, which anchors are over-optimized enough to look risky, and which competitor links you could realistically earn, so budget goes to links that move rankings instead of vanity counts. Done properly it also steers you away from the manipulative patterns Google's link spam policy targets. That gap-and-quality read is exactly the input our Link Building work runs on.
