Backlink monitoring is the ongoing tracking of the external links pointing to your site: the new referring domains you gain, the links you lose or that break, and any spammy spikes. It catches lost links early enough to recover them and flags toxic patterns before they hurt rankings.
Backlink monitoring works across two data layers. Google Search Console’s Links report is the free, authoritative baseline. It gives you Top linking sites, Top linked pages, and Top linking text, but Google is explicit about the limits: it shows a sample, tables cap at 1,000 rows, and it lists links found over time that may already be gone, without telling you which carry nofollow. So GSC tells you roughly who links to you, not reliably what changed this week.
What you actually watch
That gap is why monitoring usually pairs GSC with a dedicated backlink index (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) that timestamps new and lost links and can alert on them. The job splits three ways:
- New links: confirm the links you (or your agency) built went live and stayed live.
- Lost or broken links: catch a dropped or 404’d link fast, then email the site to reinstate it. A page migration that breaks a URL is often fixed with one message.
- Spammy spikes: watch for a flood of low-quality links from a negative-SEO attack or scraper syndication.
On that last point, do not over-react. Google says most sites never need the disavow tool because “Google can assess which links to trust without additional guidance.” Reserve disavow for a real manual action for unnatural links, not for every ugly link you spot in a report.
