Business listing

Also called: directory listing, online listing

A business listing is a business's entry on an online directory or platform (such as Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, or Apple Maps) that displays its name, address, phone number, and other details so customers and search engines can find and verify it.

Where listings live and why they matter

The most important business listing is your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), the free profile that shows up in Google Search and Maps. Google builds that profile from several sources at once: publicly crawled web content, licensed third-party data, user contributions like reviews and photos, and information you add directly.

Listings are not only a Google thing. Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, and industry-specific directories all carry their own entries, and data aggregators feed many of them. The through-line across all of them is your NAP: name, address, and phone number. Consistent NAP across the web helps Google confirm your details are accurate, and accurate information is what Google says makes a business more likely to show up, so a phone number that reads one way on Google and another way on Yelp works against you.

Complete listings also help you rank. Google’s local results are ordered by relevance, distance, and prominence, and it states plainly that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up. A plumber who fills in address, hours, service categories, and photos gives Google more to match against a search like plumber near me than a half-empty profile does. There is no way to pay Google for a better local ranking, so the listing itself is the lever you actually control.

How it affects your traffic

Your listings are the front door to the local pack and to the profile card beside Google Maps, and increasingly to AI answers that pull business facts straight from Google Business Profile. If your NAP is inconsistent or your profile is thin, you lose visibility on exactly the high-intent, ready-to-buy searches that drive calls and store visits. Claiming, verifying, cleaning, and expanding your listings across the directories that matter for your category is the core of Local SEO, and for a local business it usually moves the needle faster than almost anything else.
