clicks per search
Also called: cps, click per search
Clicks per search (CPS) is the average number of search-result clicks a keyword generates per search, calculated as total clicks divided by search volume. A CPS above 1 means people click several results per query; below 1 means many searches end without any click.
Why CPS beats raw search volume
Search volume tells you how often a keyword is queried. It does not tell you whether those searches turn into visits. That gap is what CPS measures. Ahrefs derives it as CPS = Clicks / Search Volume, so a keyword with 125K monthly searches but only 59K clicks carries a CPS around 0.47, meaning most of those searches never leave Google.
Two forces pull CPS down. First, SERP features (featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews) answer the query in place, so no click is needed. Second, single-answer navigational queries send everyone to one result. What pushes CPS above 1 is exploratory or comparison intent, where a searcher opens several results side by side. That second case is the useful one: when CPS is high, clicks are spread across multiple positions, so ranking 4th or 5th can still earn steady traffic instead of scraps.
Read CPS alongside volume before committing to a keyword. A 10K-volume term at CPS 2.0 can out-deliver a 40K-volume term at CPS 0.3 once you account for how few clicks exist and how many pages get to share them. The backdrop makes this sharper: SparkToro’s 2026 clickstream analysis found about 68% of US Google searches ended without any click, so raw volume is a weaker proxy for traffic than it has ever been.
How it affects your traffic
CPS is where keyword strategy quietly wins or loses. Chase high-volume, low-CPS terms and you can rank on page one yet see almost no traffic, because Google answers the query before anyone clicks. Our SEO Consulting work weights every target by click potential, not just volume, so the pages you build have real traffic waiting at positions you can realistically reach. That single filter routinely reshapes a keyword shortlist before a line of content gets written.
