traffic potential
Also called: tp, keyword traffic potential
Traffic potential is the total organic traffic the current #1 ranking page for a keyword receives from every keyword it ranks for, not just the one term you searched. Popularized by Ahrefs, it estimates the traffic a page could earn if it ranked #1 for that topic.
Why it beats search volume
Search volume counts how often people type one exact phrase. Traffic potential (TP) instead looks at the page currently sitting at position #1 and sums the organic traffic it pulls from all the keywords it ranks for. Because a single well-built page can rank for hundreds of related terms, TP usually runs higher than the headline search volume, sometimes far higher.
Ahrefs’ own example: the query submit website to search engines shows a search volume near 500, but the #1 page has a traffic potential around 6,200 monthly visits, because that page also ranks for many variations of the same intent. Judging that keyword on the 500 alone would badly underrate it.
The metric moves your thinking from keywords to topics, which is closer to how Google ranks: it rewards one strong page that satisfies a whole cluster of related queries. Two cautions. TP can under-count when the current #1 is a weak or off-topic page, so its traffic understates what a stronger page could earn. It can also mislead when the top result is a homepage or a broad hub ranking for unrelated terms. Read TP next to search volume, plus a quick look at what the #1 page actually is, never in isolation.
How it affects your traffic
Picking targets by traffic potential instead of raw volume is one of the highest-leverage calls in a content plan, and it is easy to get wrong. Rank for a 500-volume term whose #1 page pulls thousands of visits and you win a whole topic; misread it and you build a page that tops out at a handful of clicks. That prioritization judgment (which topics to build, in what order, and how wide each page should go) is the core of what our SEO consulting work sorts out before a single article gets written.
