cohort analysis
Also called: cohort report, cohort retention analysis
Cohort analysis groups users by a shared starting trait, usually the date they first arrived, then tracks how that same group behaves over later days, weeks, or months. It exposes retention and decay patterns that aggregate totals hide.
How a cohort report reads
A cohort report is a grid. Rows are cohorts (say, everyone who first landed the week of March 2). Columns are elapsed time (week 0, week 1, week 2). Each cell answers one question: of the people who started together, how many came back in that later period. Read a row left to right and you watch one group decay. Read a column top to bottom and you compare groups that started at different times under the same conditions.
Analysts split cohorts two ways. Acquisition cohorts group by first-touch date, which shows whether a content push or site change moved retention. Behavioral cohorts group by an action (finished onboarding, read three articles), which shows which behaviors predict people sticking around.
In GA4’s Cohort exploration you set an inclusion criterion (what puts someone in the cohort, often First touch) and a return criterion (what counts as coming back, often Any event), then pick daily, weekly, or monthly granularity. The shape to watch is the retention curve. A steep early drop that then flattens signals a real core of loyal users. A curve that keeps sliding toward zero means you acquire people but never keep them. Note that GA4 builds cohorts from device data, so User-ID stitching is not applied.
How it affects your traffic
Search engines and AI answer engines both lean on engagement quality, and repeat visits are one of the clearest quality signals a site can show. Aggregate organic traffic can look flat while every new cohort of visitors churns faster than the last, which usually points to thin content, a slow template, or a title that oversells the page. Running cohort analysis on organic-acquired users during an SEO Audit tells you whether your rankings earn durable attention or one-and-done clicks, and it isolates the exact content batch or site change where retention broke. That turns the audit from a checklist into a prioritized diagnosis.
