content gap analysis
Also called: Content gap, content gaps
Content gap analysis is the process of finding topics and queries your audience searches for that your site does not cover well, usually by comparing your pages against competitors that already rank for them. It flags where content is missing, thin, outdated, or off-intent so you can fill it.
Four kinds of gap
Not every gap is a missing page. Analysts usually sort them into four buckets. A topic gap is a subject your audience cares about that you never wrote about. An intent gap means you cover the topic but the page answers a different question than the searcher wants. A quality gap is a page that exists but is thin, outdated, or unclear. An originality gap is a page that just repeats what competitors already said.
The common starting move is a keyword gap: pull the organic keywords competitors rank for, subtract the ones you already rank for, and what is left is your shortlist. From there you read the actual SERP for each query to decide whether a new page, a rewrite, or a merge is the right call. Brian Dean’s Skyscraper Technique is a textbook example of filling a gap. He studied what the top-ranking pages left out (outdated data, few examples, hard to follow), then published a more complete piece and used it to win links and rankings.
Google frames the same idea from the reader’s side. Its people-first guidance asks whether content gives “a substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic” and whether someone leaves “feeling they’ve learned enough” to reach their goal. A gap analysis is how you find pages that fail that test before Google’s systems do. In 2026 the exercise extends to AI answers: check which queries trigger AI Overviews or ChatGPT citations where competitors show up and you do not.
How it affects your traffic
Gaps are where competitors quietly take traffic you could own. A content gap analysis turns "we should write more" into a ranked list of specific pages to build, rewrite, or merge, each tied to real search demand and a competitor already proving the intent converts. That prioritization is the core of our SEO Consulting work: we run the gap analysis, then sequence the fixes by traffic upside and difficulty so effort lands on pages that can actually move revenue instead of adding volume for its own sake.
