content audit
Also called: content inventory, SEO content audit, content review
A content audit is a systematic inventory and assessment of every page on a website, scoring each URL against traffic, rankings, and quality so you can decide whether to keep, improve, merge, or remove it. It turns a sprawling site into a prioritized action list.
From inventory to a keep/improve/merge/cut decision
A content audit starts with a crawl (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or your CMS export) that lists every indexable URL with its title, word count, status code, and internal links. You pull performance data from Search Console and analytics (clicks, impressions, position), layer in quality checks, then sort each page into one of four buckets:
- Keep: stable, useful, still earning clicks. Leave it, recheck later.
- Improve: right topic, thin execution. Add the sections, proof, and answers the SERP rewards.
- Merge: two pages compete for the same query. Consolidate into one and
301the loser. - Cut: outdated or dead weight. Remove or redirect.
The merge and cut calls matter more than people expect. Google assesses quality partly at the site level: “having some poor site-wide signals does not mean all the content from a site will rank poorly,” but a pile of low-value pages can still weigh on the domain. Google also publishes self-assessment questions (“Does the content provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis?”, “Does the content appear sloppy or hastily produced?”) that make good scoring criteria. After a core update, an audit is doubly useful. Google tells site owners to “review your top pages and queries,” assess how they were ranking before and after the update, and then closely evaluate the pages that were most impacted.
Cadence: quarterly for fast-publishing sites, at least once a year for everyone else.
How it affects your traffic
A content audit is usually the first deliverable in an SEO engagement, because it shows where the traffic wins already are before you spend on new pages. Cutting or merging cannibalizing and dead URLs often lifts the pages that survive, and reworking near-miss pages costs far less than writing from scratch. If you want a prioritized keep/improve/merge/cut plan built from your own Search Console data instead of guesswork, that scoring and roadmap is the core of our SEO consulting work.
